Weight Loss Surgery Recovery and Follow-Up

What occurs after your surgery is just as important as the procedure itself. Your recovery and follow-up care are critical to your success, as they play a vital role in ensuring you’re able to lose the precise amount of weight you need to reclaim your health and your life.

What To Expect During Your Weight Loss Surgery Recovery

The length of your recovery will vary depending on the type of bariatric surgery you underwent, which is why Dr. David Davtyan tailors every patient’s program to their unique needs. However, in general, most patients are able to drive and return to work within a few days after surgery. While you’re healing at home, you should be able to perform simple daily activities without extra assistance. You should avoid lifting anything heavier than twenty pounds for the first six weeks, but other than that you are encouraged to participate in your regular daily activities, like light exercise.

In terms of nutrition, you’ll need to adopt a liquid diet for the first two to three weeks, before advancing to semi-solid foods for another few weeks. With Dr. David Davtyan’s approval and guidance, you’ll eventually transition back to a diet of regular solid foods within nine to twelve weeks. The gradual nature of this transition is critical to your recovery, because it allows your new stomach pouch to heal properly and it gives you time to adjust to having a smaller stomach.

Your Post-Operative Care Schedule

Dr. David Davtyan and his team are committed to helping you make lasting changes to your body. As such, they’ve created a comprehensive follow-up care program, to make sure you have the support you need. After surgery, it’s recommended that you make follow-up visits on the following schedule:

  • Weekly for 6 weeks
  • Monthly for next 2 years

Why Is Post-Operative Care So Important?

It's Critical To Your Success

The success of your procedure isn’t immediately apparent following your discharge from the hospital. Weight loss after bariatric surgery generally occurs gradually, over a period of 12 to 24 months. Ongoing follow-up care and guidance will allow Dr. David Davtyan to identify any issues, maximize your success and ensure the best possible results.

Transitioning To Solid Foods Requires Guidance

The process of properly transitioning from liquids to solid foods requires the counseling and guidance of a leading bariatric surgeon, like Dr. David Davtyan. In addition, our dieticians and weight loss experts will coach you on how to make healthy choices and avoid foods that can undermine your results.

It's An Opportunity To Identify Deficiencies

Your follow-up visits give Dr. David Davtyan the opportunity to recognize any vitamin, mineral or other deficiencies. If detected early on, these deficiencies can be quickly and easily treated. However, patients who miss regularly scheduled follow-up visits run the risk of suffering from long-term nutritional deficiencies, which can lead to other health risks and challenges.

It Ensures You Lose More Weight

Time and time again, our experience has shown that patients who come in for their follow-up appointments on the recommended schedule almost always lose more weight than those who miss their appointments.
