Lap Band Surgery In Los Angeles

Lap Band Surgery

Also known as gastric banding, the Lap-Band is the safest weight loss surgery option today and is the only operation approved by the FDA for lower BMI patients (BMI 30-35). In our hands, it is also extremely effective, achieving in excess of 200 pounds of weight loss when needed. It involves placing a band around part of the stomach, reducing its size, and limiting the amount of food you can consume.

What is Lap Band Surgery?

Gastric banding is a surgical weight loss procedure that involves the placement of an adjustable silicone band around part of the stomach. The procedure is most commonly referred to as Lap Band, after the brand name of a leading adjustable gastric banding device.

Gastric banding falls into the category of restrictive weight loss surgery. This means it works by simply reducing the stomach size and limiting the amount of food one can comfortably consume. It also means, unlike other types of weight loss surgeries, that no disconnection or re-routing of the intestines is required. Another perk of haivng Lap-band is If you are not happy with the the results, you can always choose to have your Lap Band removed.

How Is Lap Band Surgery Done?

Requiring no incision to the intestines or actual stomach, gastric banding is the least invasive option in weight loss surgery. The procedure is done laparoscopically. This means that the entire surgery is conducted using several small surgical instruments and a thin, lighted viewing instrument, all of which are inserted through a few small incisions in the abdomen. The name Lap Band is actually just a foreshortening of the full name for such a device, which is “Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band.”

How Does Lap Band Help You To Lose Weight?

During Lap Band surgery, small tools are used to place an adjustable silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach, separating it into two sections. Typically, the human stomach has an average capacity of forty ounces. When sectioned by gastric banding, the capacity of the upper part of the stomach is reduced to just one to two ounces.

The advantage of this is that a person will begin to feel full and want to stop eating after having only filled up the new upper pouch. Food then passes slowly through the small opening between the upper and lower stomach, which is created by the tightened band. Unlike many weight loss surgeries, which change the way the body digests and processes food, gastric banding simply slows down the natural process. This means that the stomach can still tolerate most types of food, foods that would otherwise be off-limits for most weight loss surgery patients.

Lap Band Adjustability

The Lap Band is adjustable due to a plastic tube that runs from the band to a device called a “port”. During surgery, the port is surgically attached to the muscle wall of the abdomen, just under the skin. Through this port, a trained physician can inject or extract a saline solution to adjust the tightness of the band. This adjustability allows the band to be individually optimized, in order to achieve maximum weight loss with minimal side effects. As weight is lost, the band may also require further adjustment.

Am I a Candidate For Lap Band Surgery?

There are certain specific requirements one must meet in order to qualify for Lap-Band surgery. The procedure is generally reserved for adults with a BMI of 40 or higher, or individuals with a BMI between 30 and 40 who also have at least one other obesity-related health condition which might be improved with weight loss.

A minimally-invasive procedure, your Lap-Band surgery will be performed with tiny surgical tools and a thin, lighted viewing instrument – all of which will be carefully inserted through several minute incisions in your abdomen. The viewing instrument will be connected to a screen in the operating room, which will guide Dr. David Davtyan throughout your procedure. To perform the surgery, Dr. David Davtyan will fasten an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of your stomach, which will create a new, smaller stomach pouch that limits the amount of food you can consume. The band will also create a small outlet that slows the emptying process into the stomach and intestines, so you feel full and satisfied with smaller amounts of food.

An Overview Of Your Recovery

Because Lap-Band is a minimally-invasive procedure, you can look forward to a relatively quick and easy recovery period from the comfort of your home. For the first few days after surgery, you should focus on getting plenty of rest and taking short walks around the house to promote circulation and decrease your chances of developing a blood clot. In addition, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least a few weeks to ensure an optimal healing process.

You’ll also need to follow very specific dietary instructions after surgery. For example, you’ll need to embrace a liquid-only diet for the first two weeks to give your stomach a chance to heal. Some examples of safe liquids will be provided by Dr. David Davtyan. From there, you will progress to soft, pureed foods for the next four weeks. And finally, at around six weeks post-surgery you will be able to resume eating solid foods – but in much smaller portions than before.
